The Outdoor Education Program offered at the Tanamakoon Outdoor Center is planned to develop both recreational and academic pursuits. The program is carefully planned to encourage the social, emotional and physical development of students. The activities offered within the program can best be learned in a setting which offers learning in the out of doors and community living.
Academic activities offered can give new perspectives to those learned in the classroom. The recreational activities can help to teach the students the value of using leisure time constructively. Both facets of the program encourage independence and self- confidence while at the same time emphasizing the growth of social skills through the development of group living and learning.
Location and Facilities
The Outdoor Education Centre is located 24 kilometres inside the west gates of Algonquin Provincial Park on Lake Tanamakoon. The natural setting of rock and pine trees; that Algonquin is historically famous for, make this a particularly beautiful and unique setting in which students can learn. The camp has several large buildings including a Dining Hall and meeting Lodge. The Cabins that students live in are simple and rugged. Tanamakoon believes that it is important for young people today to experience living without the luxuries of heat and electricity. This is the reason that the Centre provides a programme that will teach the skills of outdoor survival in a setting which provides only the intrinsic values of group living.

Our programs run from 3-5 days in duration and are designed to meet the Ontario Education Curriculum for students in Grade 6-8. The Outdoor Education program was started in 1985 and today operates in the spring and fall for the following schools:
